What is a dental implant?

dental implant

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. It’s a small titanium post placed into the jawbone, where it slowly bonds with the bone as it heals.  Once healing is complete, the implant supports a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture. The finished tooth looks natural and feels stable. Many patients say their dental implant quickly feels like it has always been there.

Why Dental Implant Treatment Makes a Difference

When a tooth is missing, the bone underneath no longer gets stimulation and can begin to shrink. Over time, this can affect nearby teeth, your bite, and even the shape of your face. Dental implants help prevent those changes by keeping the jawbone active and supported.

Implants also restore daily comfort. You can chew foods you’ve been avoiding, speak without worrying about movement, and smile without covering your mouth. For many people, implant dentistry is about quality of life as much as oral health.

Who Usually Chooses a Dental Implant?

Dental implants work well for adults missing one tooth, several teeth, or struggling with loose dentures. Tooth loss from decay, injury, or gum disease are all common reasons patients explore implants.

The Dental Implant Process

  1. A dental implant consists of a titanium post that is placed in the bone by one of our trusted surgeons. That post acts like the root of your tooth.

  2. The bone fuses to the post during approximately 4 months of healing time.

  3. Once that healing is complete, Dr. MacNeill works with her dental lab to fabricate a custom made crown or bridge that she attaches to the implant.
