Many times during sleep our jaw and tongue relaxes down and back, which blocks our airway. Snoring is air making a rattling noise as it travels through a tight, partially blocked airway. Sleep apnea is when the airway is completely blocked so that no air can get through at all for periods of time while sleeping.
Not true! Oral appliance therapy uses a "mouth guard-like" device worn during sleep. The appliance stabilizes the jaw so it cannot fall back and the tongue therefore doesn't block the airway.
Studies show that a CPAP is very effective at treating sleep apnea, if you can wear it regularly. Some patients cannot tolerate the masks and tubes though. Many patients are more satisfied with an oral appliance because they are more comfortable, are noise-free and are more portable than a CPAP.

Dr. Joni MacNeill, though originally from Wyoming, moved to the Seattle area as a child, where she later earned her B.S. in Biology from the University of Washington and her dental degree from the University of of the Pacific in 2005. Returning to Seattle, she practiced for a decade, completed advanced studies at the distinguished Kois Center in 2011, and married her childhood friend, Matt, with whom she now has two young daughters, Elise and Mya.
In 2015, the MacNeills moved to Sandpoint, North Idaho, drawn by the community and the area's recreational opportunities, where they enjoy hiking, skiing, and spending summers on the lake. Dr. MacNeill believes the most rewarding part of her job is building relationships with patients, actively listening to understand their goals, and providing gentle, preventative care to maintain their health and beautiful smiles.
